My Keynote on Cloud Governance at the 2024 Global Azure Bootcamp

In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the shift to cloud computing is inevitable. However, as organizations migrate to the cloud, the importance of effective cloud governance cannot be overstated. At the 2024 Global Azure Bootcamp, hosted by the Nigeria Azure Community, I had the privilege of delivering the keynote address on the serious side of the cloud: governance. This article aims to share the core insights and best practices from my keynote.

What is Cloud Governance?

To start, let’s demystify cloud governance. Essentially, it's the set of policies, procedures, and controls that organizations implement to manage their cloud services. Think of it as the rules of the road for the cloud, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and securely, much like traffic regulations keep our roads safe. Just as traffic laws are crucial for order, cloud governance is vital for aligning cloud resource use with an organization's goals.

Now let me make it relatable as It’s hard not to draw comparisons to the governance issues we face here in Nigeria. We all know too well the impact of poor governance: corruption, lack of transparency, and inadequate accountability. These issues have impede our progress across various sectors. The same principles that can guide effective cloud governance can also be applied to national governance, offering a roadmap to better management and accountability.

For an effective governance, whether in the cloud or in our country Nigeria, it involves many stakeholders. In the cloud context, this means IT teams, business units, and compliance officers all need to work together. The same collaborative spirit is needed in national governance, where various government departments and the public must cooperate. Questions like “What data and infrastructure do we have?” and “Can we trust the data we have?” are fundamental in both scenarios. Knowing what we have and being able to trust it is the foundation of good governance.

Core Elements of Cloud Governance

Understanding and cataloguing data and infrastructure what we call Discovery is the first step in cloud governance. Imagine if Nigeria had a similar approach to cataloguing its resources. How transformative would that be? Following this, ensuring Compliance by adhering to regulations is crucial in the cloud. In Nigeria, strict compliance with laws and policies would significantly curb corruption and build public trust.

To navigate cloud governance effectively, treating data and infrastructure as strategic assets is key. This approach requires:

Team Effort: Success comes from collaboration across departments, much like national progress requires collective effort.
